Message from the Chairman

Wally WeismanCaltech's new president, Jean-Lou Chameau, has taken a leadership role in the "There's only one. Caltech" campaign. Arriving in September as the campaign began heading into its fifth year, Dr. Chameau has engaged faculty, staff, students, and alumni, and potential friends in supporting Caltech and its mission.

At this point in the campaign, we have raised 83 percent of the $1.4 billion goal. Our very generous supporters have enabled the launching of a number of major initiatives, several of which are featured in this issue of Campaign Update. You will find the latest news on the Institute's building projects, including the rededication of the South Houses and the groundbreaking for the Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics; the Caltech Associates' successful 2006 fund-raising campaign for the Geological and Planetary Sciences parallel computer; and the Information Science and Technology program, which has been producing innovative research in numerous areas. In addition, you will read about the Joseph J. Jacobs Institute of Molecular Engineering for Medicine, established by a substantial bequest from the late founder of Jacobs Engineering, and of Jerry Werner (BS '47), who has established a remarkable seven gift annuities that will ultimately benefit the Institute.

The Institute owes a great deal to all whose gifts have helped make these accomplishments possible and driven the campaign forward. As we head into the final stretch, there are still many exciting opportunities available to support the Institute. I invite you to go above and beyond in your philanthropy to ensure that Caltech remains at the vanguard of science and technology.

Wally Weisman
